Selfie is not a "self-taken photo". Selfie is a POSTED "self-taken photo"

Think about this subtle difference while you can.

This is very interesting to me because I noticed the exact same phenomenon recently when I visited the Kara Walker exhibition, which is mostly about slavery, at the Domino Sugar factory in Brooklyn. In every direction, people were taking smiling selfies. It made me think of the festive photos people used to have taken at lynchings, which I overinterpreted to mean something about the horribleness of the exhibition visitors and the genius of the artist, who may have anticipated this.

But now I think I misread that the same way the author of this piece and several of the commenters have overinterpreted what's going on in the Auschwitz selfies. The simple truth is that for a lot of kids raised on social media, anything and everything is a selfie backdrop. Even worse, when you have spent your entire life transmitting where you are and what you're doing to everyone you ever met, several times a day, you have almost no capacity to immerse yourself in a moment and reflect on anything.

Let me guess. My comment is "Pending / Censored" because I used the forbidden name "Hitler" in association with "Auschwitz" a "German Death Camp"? The editor must be Jewish? Right? And this is Jewish "Political Correctness Week"? May I remind "The New Yorker" that political correctness is fascism and that you journalists have colleagues in an Egyptian jail due to political correctness. Let's see the Censorship all around. Selfies at  Auschwitz is just passing judgment on the hypocrisy of our loser editors and loser leaders and loser judges everywhere. It is the people's way of saying: "Nothing has changed. What a joke." 

BTW Auschwitz camp was made for Poles, Birkenau for Jews, 

Who didn't do things at 17 years old that make you chillingly embarrassed when you reflect on them 30 years later?

With all due respect, this is a ridiculous article. These are photos of people visiting Auschwitz - taken by themselves - to commemorate their trip to an historical landmark; the EXACT same thing people have done for over a century, before the word, "selfie" was coined on the internet to replace the descriptor, "self-taken photo". The reason this SOUNDS offensive is that "selfie" is a word that sounds trivial and "fun". To attack people taking photos to commemorate their trip to a place is beyond absurd; unless there's a sign somewhere at Auschwitz saying that visitors aren't permitted to smile? Oh, wait, no, that was taken down when the camp was LIBERATED. Good GRIEF. My friend's grandparents, one of whom SURVIVED Auschwitz, took a photo of themselves there - SMILING - a "selfie", in other words. Should SHE feel bad for doing it? Oh, wait, maybe she shouldn't, because she was smiling because we, oh, I dunno, WON THE WAR and she was HAPPY at that particular moment? And as for the kids mentioned in the article, they're just being kids, for God's sake.This article is beneath the integrity of this magazine; it appears to have been written specifically to incite anger in people with a severe lack of critical thinking skills - and worse, to use the topic of Auschwitz to get SEO hits on word currently in popular usage, which is the most cynical and shameful thing I've seen a publication do in quite a long time. How this made it past the New Yorker's editors is beyond me.

To the ignorant who wrote this article: make some more effort with your historic research before posting gibberish about Poland`s death camps. Those were German Nazi concentration camps in occupied Poland!!!

I applaud the author's sensitivity.  "The death camps of Poland" sounds so much better than "German death camps in built in occupied Poland" or even "Nazi death camps in Poland." Of course, doing so might have shed some light on the camp's oh-so-Polish sounding name 'Auschwitz-Birkenau.'

About 8 years ago in LA, ABC ran a spectacular billboard of Oprah Winfrey's grinning face next to the headline: Oprah Goes To Auschwitz.

Adolescent or not, they are sociopaths.

Auschwitz selfies are indeed horrifying, but then, adolescents by definition are sensuous, empty-headed and amoral; they don't know what they're doing.  Nevertheless, the page was a good wake-up call, and I'm glad some of them got it.  Grew 'em up a notch.
